Part-time Job

From Telkoth.net

I had this dream that I was looking for a part-time job here in Charlottesville. I was looking around on-line for something that would be within walking distance, etc, but otherwise didn't much care what it was.

Finally I found something that was in some building at the UVa campus. It didn't say exactly what the job was, but I figured I'd at least check it out.

I set out at night, for some reason. Apparently this was the time that was said to come by. But when I got to the campus, I realized I had no idea where the building was. (I don't remember what the building was called... something with "V"s and "L"s, I feel.)

[edit] The Thief

I wandered around... at one point some guy stopped me and was like, "do you know how much that necklace is worth?" He was pointing down through this glass ceiling of a basement level of some building. (We were on the grass at ground level, looking down into this room.) I looked at it. It was in this display on a black bust. I'd call it a pearl necklace, except that the "pearls" were these huge, bluish-blackish-sliverish balls. Anyway, I asked him something like "Are you going to steal that? You're a thief, aren't you?" His reply was something like "of course not," except with this smile... anyway, the point is that he totally was.

[edit] The Fancy Party

Anyway, I moved on. Eventually I gave up on finding the building myself and turned on my cellphone's GPS. It told me I was at my destination, and showed a picture of the building. I looked around, and sure enough, on my right, there was the building. I could even line up the picture on the phone with what I was seeing.

As I approached, I noticed that a very fancy party was taking place inside. Dressed-up people were walking in and out. I was a little worried I wouldn't get in, but went for it anyway. As I got to the guy at the door, I started to wave "hi," but he stopped me. I forget the exact dialog but it was something like...

Doorman: You can't go inside, such-and-such party is taking place.
Me: I'm applying for a job, it's inside this building.
Doorman: Well I still can't let you in.
Me: Well if this is the right building, I'm going in.

And I showed him a receipt? It was a receipt that apparently had the address for where the job application was taking place. I don't know how I got that on a receipt. Anyway, he handed it to some other person behind him, and she looked at it, and looked up at me, and said something like "if it's for an application, we're not allowed to stop him," and handed the receipt back to the guy, who handed it to me before reluctantly letting me in.

[edit] The Elevator-Lift Thing

As I walked in, I looked at my receipt. It had a room number on it, 300-something, I think. I asked the lady how I could get there. She thanked me for asking - I get the impression she was happy that I'd be getting to my destination quickly, rather than wandering around - and told me to take the elevators, which were just up some stairs, up six floors. Or maybe the room number was 600-something, and I was going up three floors... I think that was it. It was something that made me stop and think "really?" before thinking "of course, there must be floors below us, too," so I guess it was a 600-room and I was only going up three floors.

Anyway, I got inside the elevator. It was not like a normal elevator. It was more like a little cart. You could see out the windows, and there were benches around the outside to sit in. Actually, now that I type all this, it was like these lifts we went on when I visited Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They have these old wooden lifts that you get in, and they take you up a hill at close to 45°. These were not old and wooden - they were nice, and... not wooden - but they did take us up, and at an even lower angle.

A couple other people were in the elevator with me, including a cute girl that I started to talk to. I started talking to her... we each asked the other where we came from... I forget where she said she was from. I told her I've moved around a lot, that I was born in California, but tend to see myself as being Virginian. (Something like that.) We talked about other little things. I don't know if I ever got her name, but I don't remember it anyway.

I also remember making a comment about how this was less like an elevator, and more like a [something referencing how it's moving us more horizontally than vertically].

[edit] The Theatre

We finally reached the top. I could immediately see the room we were going for, and started walking there, along with a couple other people from the cart-elevator-thing, including the girl I'd been talking to, and some other girl. When we got to the room, I could see it was a theatre. It was darkly-lit, but a few people were here - also applying - and a couple people were up on stage. I asked a woman on my way in: "Could you tell me what the job is? I found out about it on a website, but you didn't say what it was on the site." The response, "cheerleading." >_>

[edit] The End

I'm sure I said something like "ah," maybe with a polite "thanks," and turned around to leave.

On the elevator-thing's ride back down, I talked to someone about how this whole silly ordeal; how I found this job application, but without telling what the job was, so I came here, and it was for cheerleading. He didn't seem to care, or to even really be listening.

I think by now it was light outside. Actually, it may have been light on the elevator ride up, too.
