Tornado of fire!?

I heard about this fantastic display of explosives taking place in D.C. from Laura and promptly rounded up all my friends so we could go see the amazing tornado of fire.
We did not see anything which might be called a "tornado of fire".
I mean, it was still pretty cool (check out those pictures below), but was there a swirling fire which seemed to touch the sky? No. Not a one. I mean, from the picture on that Kennedy Center description, there really should have been a giant tornado of flame.
Maybe the US government wasn't keen on a tornado of fire anywhere near the capital, I dunno, but nearly an hour after the show there were still people sitting there, waiting for the tornado. We didn't leave until Laura and Stephen asked some worker at the Kennedy Center whether or not the show was ever going to continue:
Laura L.: nah, the lady was very clear that that was it and everything had gone exactly as planned
Laura L.: she seemed hardly able to comprehend that we might thing otherwise... it was pretty funny
Laura L.: our conversation: hey, is everything okay? what's going on?
attendant lady: o, no, everything's fine -- there was a fireworks show.
Laura L.: us: yeah, but, is everything all right out there? why'd they stop?
lady: well, the show's over now.
Laura L.: us: umm. we were told that there would be a TORNADO of FIRE. are they not going to do it? was it cancelled?
lady: no, there was a tornado of fire. that last bit, with the (*hand gesture, etc*) -- that was the tornado
The "hand gesture, etc" bit at the end was pretty cool, with really loud explosions which shook the groud, and cascades of white fireworks. The timing between each round of these was very oddly spaced, so I was never prepared with my camera for it. It was also that odd timing which really had you waiting for the next round: the tornado which would never come.
Well, I still got to hang out with lots of cool people. I spent the night up in Fairfax, and the next day with Raul and his brother, playing Magic and Step Mania so it wasn't a total loss.
