Volcano Island
From Telkoth.net
This dream took place on the night of 2006.01.27, or the morning of 2006.01.28 - however you want to look at it. As I've mentioned in other Dreams, I tend to remember dreams on a night with strange sleeping situations. At first I was confused, because this night seemed pretty normal, but later I remembered: when I got home from playing Mage that night, Katie wasn't home, and I ended up going to bed without her. Turns out she got home some half-hour or hour after I was in bed, though, and I'm very certain that the dream took place after that (REM takes a while to kick in). Anyway, it's the only unusual aspect I can think of.

[edit] The Dream
I've never had a dream before where, like, it came with a name, but this dream was, without a doubt, called "Volcano Island," and there was this strange awareness of that fact throughout the dream, as if we were seeing a movie the previews for which we were very familiar with.
"We," in this case, means Stephen, Zach, Katie (who I think sometimes was Tess) and of course me. Also, I kind of get the feeling that Jesse was in there on occasion, but I can't place him exactly.
[edit] Disaster!
Anyway, I think it all started on a happy arcipellago home town, or something like that, when a terrible storm rolled in. And this was no normal storm: the skies were thick with smoke, and the ocean was scalding hot, and somewhere it was probably raining fire, or something.
The transitions from scene to scene are not all entirely clear to me, but we somehow found an old airplane, and took to the skies. I wish I remember who it was piloting the thing, 'cause that would have been cool for whoever it was. But anyway, we took off, but I don't think so much to escape as to find the cause of this storm, and maybe even to put a stop to it.
The smokey/cloudy things were really thick, in that we couldn't see through them. We were above them, occasionally passing through, and they didn't choke us, so if they were smoke, it wasn't detrimental to, say, our breathing.
[edit] Volcano Island Itself
Anyway, at last we came to a break in the clouds/smoke, and below us saw what we knew immediately to be [dramatic pause] Volcano Island. This next scene had a very video-gamey feel: the camera kinda' hung there above us, pointed down at Volcano Island, and then you could see our plane as it made a large turn down toward this long bit on the island (see picture). Just as the plane was touching down, the camera rushed down in that kind of way where it really wasn't very fast (also, you could see the detail of the terrain increase as the camera approached, as if more polygons were being added as the distance closed), but it didn't take as long as it should have given the speed, but anyway the camera beat the plane there, then panned a little clockwise and up, so that the horizon was low in its view, and the side of the plane was on the right, just as it landed, and then we all hopped out of it. And then the camera angle went back to normal, which... I guess just a hovering third-person view was normal for this dream.
Exploring Volcano Island was very bizarre. We went south a little ways (or, at least, a direction I referred to south in a map I started making, but we had no real idea about the direction - more on the map later), and entered a door in the side of... well, maybe rocks, or maybe it was obviously the side of a building... this is one of those scene transitions I'm again not clear on, but we went inside this house... but it was a messed up house. The rooms were like normal rectangular in-so-much as that they posessed 90 degree angles, but really they were more often bizarre L shapes, or like an "H" missing the lower-right leg, in the case of one basement-looking room. Anyway, we started to explore a little, going through a couple doors. It wasn't far in before we realized that this house was really big, so I started to draw a map, using solid dots to indicate each room, and arrows to indicate how you might go from that room to the next. I can't remember the exact layout, but it would have looked something like this:
The arrows indicate our initial paths. The passages weren't, like, one-way or anything.
[edit] 60s-style Kitchen
Those stairs: during the course of the dream we discovered at least three floors. Not that any room on any floor seemed to care which floor it was on, in terms of whether or not it looked like a basement, kitchen, living room, etc. We found at least two kitchens, one very small like some kind of dusty old 60's kitchen. This small kitchen was one of the few on the highest floor (that we found) of this place, and even had windows out to our plane on the tip of the island. Like, really small. I'll draw a floorplan...
I kind of think there was a window on the left wall of the room as well. Also, while drawing this I was having difficulty remembering if the door swings in the room, or out of it, but then I remembered that it had no swinging door - it was just the door frame. I think that added to the old-style feel.
Anyway, the refrigerator - oh, sorry, freezer - was very empty. Except for juice. There were bottles of, like, Ocean Splash whatever, and Juicy Juice... you know, in those plasticy bottles. There were also a couple yogurts, and some plasticy cans of colored, flavored sugar. I guess like Tang or Kool-Aide, but at the time I didn't get the impression that you would use them to make juice. Although that might have been because there was so much juice already. Oh, there were also a couple cups of yogurt in there.
And I'm afraid I've gotten a little out of order: this was the last room we explored, since we couldn't go up anymore. We had found a larger kitchen before, containing similar foods, and were disappointed, because juice and yogurt was not going to keep us alive.
Which is ironic for me to say, 'cause that's a lot of what I eat in real life :P for breakfast, anyway...
Anyway, after this disappointing discovery, we headed back down a floor. I guess you'd call that the groudn floor, since it's the level we entered on. We'd never explored the floor below, and did not intend to.
Other rooms we had explored:
- the basement-looking "H"-missing-it's-lower-right-leg - with wood panels on the bottom half of the walls, and that pointy ceiling finish
- a sizeable kitchen
- a small "laundry room", with cement floor, exposed wall bits, etc. don't remember if there were actually laundry machines there.
[edit] Gelato
| 2008.12.27: How strange! I have just now randomly re-read this dream, and realized that I sometimes accidentally start to call Katie Tess. This has happened even relatively recently. I wonder why my brain is apparently prone to making that error, even two years later! Brains are so weird... I wonder if this is coincidental or not. |
When we got down, we met up with everyone else in the "sizeable kitchen". I don't remember who all was with me exploring, but I do remember that Katie/Tess was one of the people in the sizeable kitchen. This is where the confusion between Katie and Tess takes place, because I'm pretty sure that it's my sister Tess making gelato out of that crazy flavored sugar and some other goop she found there, but I'm not quite sure, 'cause it was the same person as was Katie... I'm sure it's the sort of thing that made perfect sense within the dream...
Anyway, this gelato... in was only half-done, and apparently that means it had the consistency of... goo? Like you know that stuff you get for a quarter in the little plastic bubble, and it's that stupid hand that sticks to things? It had kind of that consistency, but as a big ball, and a little more mixable, 'cause Tess-Katie was mixing it up in one of those wire mesh straining things, and it was all rainbow colored, like rainbow sherbert. And I think we asked her about where she got that, and I took a close look, and it looked weird, but she assured me that it would turn out just like gelato once she was done.
[edit] Going to Bed & Waking Up
Anyway, it was getting late, and the fire storm of doom was still going on outside (but not on Volcano Island itself... this place was safe, as if it was the very eye of the storm), and so we stareted to set up some kind of sleeping spaces in the basementish room. We were able to find, among old chairs and a long unused weight machine, some sleeping bags and blankets, or something.
It was at about this time that I woke up.
[edit] Conclusions
Exploring the multi-story house with my friends reminds me a bit of the Mage game I just finished up with my friends, wherein we were raiding (/trying desperately to escape from) an "abandoned" Technocratic installation. It was many floors, with many rooms, and we even had to spend a night there, worried about cloned Sons of Ether and/or Werewolves.
As for Volcano Island itself and the fire storm surrounding it... I dunno.
