Work today == crazy

From Telkoth.net

Today work was crazy... our normal fellow that works receiving in the mornings, Kurt, was not around. The guy delivering packages must have been standing out for some time before he was noticed. When he was, I was promptly called to the back to receive the boxes. Um, 'cause I know what I'm doing...

My boss - can't remember which one - told me to just count the boxes as the guy handed them to me, but I knew it was more complicated than that - there are various labels, and the boxes should be divided up somewhat by their labels... like all the boxes with customer orders, and all the boxes which go to those bargain shelves. Oh, and I'm bad at keeping count :P Thankfully Gary came in after we unloaded the first batch of 70 or so (I counted what I could see while the delivery guy was getting the second load). No one asked me for a count, so I didn't tell anyone I didn't have one :)

Later on, the person responsible for getting in all the new newspapers and getting rid of the old ones called in and said he'd be late due to alarm clock issues. They called for any of the shelvers to take over that. None of us knew what was involved, so I said "fine, I do magazines, I'll do it." Simple enough - just replace the old ones with new ones, and write in how many we got, and how many we're taking off the shelves... some needed to be repriced - Barnes and Noble apparently does that the high-tech way: with a Bic pen.

My shelving work was quite delayed at this point. Then the store opened. Some kind of "mothers and daughters" event was going on, and countless children poured in, with balloons, for the story time event we were doing that morning. The usual kids peope weren't here today, so this guy Angel, about my age, read. I noticed that after the first story most people left... usually they stick around for more. Of course, they couldn't leave without buying books, so suddenly there was a rush at the cash registers, and they were looking for someone to help out. Since the other two shelvers were gonna leave soon, that got to be me! I haven't done all that nonsense since, like, my third day at Barnes and Noble. They took me back to count up all the moneys in one of the tills, so I started doing that. I don't remember how many dollars are in a roll of dimes or nickles, so I was counting those by hand... I get rolls of quarters enough, so I knew those :P Then a Rachel came back to check on me, and reminded me that we have this handy device that weighs coins to tell us how many are there. It automatically waits for you to put on the dish of pennies, weighs it, then waits for nickles, etc, etc, and even does the bills. Half way between doing things the good way, Tree came in and said she was gonna do the register thing for me. I thanked her many times, and happily went about with my shelving, which with all the distractions, and my lunch, took until about 1:00 - usually shelvers are outta' there at 11.

Made the day more interesting, anyway. Barely got all the magazines done in time. The audit crew didn't help any - opening and re-sealing boxes to make sure we were doing everything right, asking where things were, bla-bla-bla.

Well, it was fun - heh. If you could call shelving books and newspapers and listening to bad story time reading fun.

I was able to get in another half hour of Neuromancer during my breaks, anyway, so that's cool. That book really needs to not be read in 15 minute intrevals, though... oh well. I'm too lazy to read while I'm at home. I have more important things to do! Like, um, watch Star Trek: The Next Generation, listen to classical and techno/trance, make split pea soup, and make wiki posts :P
